Munich has a fantastic public transport system, which allows you to travel on all buses, trams, underground trains [U-Bahn or S-Bahn] all with 1 ticket. There are 4 zones like onion rings starting with the central zone [Innenraum] and 3 further zones making up the outskirts [Aussenraum] of the city. There are no conductors from whom you could buy your ticket from; and the tram/bus driver can’t take fares either. They do however have groups of inspectors (some of them looking just like Blakey from “On the Busses”) checking that everyone has a valid ticket. If you are caught without one then you are looking at a €40.- fine.
You must buy and validate (Date Stamp) your ticket in advance using one of the many ticket machines found on all stations. You can use notes to pay with, as machines will give out change. You validate (Date Stamp) your ticket by stamping it before getting onto the train. The only exceptions are tickets bought on trams or busses, which are already issued with a date stamp. Children under six years of age who do not yet attend school may travel free of charge when accompanied by a chaperone. During the night at weekends the U-Bahn / S-Bahn runs until about 2:00am, whereby the bus and trams run about every half hour right through the night.
2 Steps to buying a ticket
1. Buy your ticket from a vending machine
2. Validate it - (Date stamp) by inserting it into the blue box.

You can hail a taxi on the street if their light is on (Yellow “TAXI” sign on the roof) or go to one of the many taxi stands around town with cabs just waiting to take you to your destination. All taxis have a meter showing how much is being charged. There is a basic fare of € 2.90 (an additional € 1.- if you have telephoned, and an extra €0.50 if you have luggage or an animal). Trains
The main railway station [Hauptbahnhof], is Munich’s rail hub. Planning your journey and booking tickets is easy online at www.bahn.de Note the language selection is in the middle of the page on the left of the journey planner. There is also a ticket and information office found in the middle of the main hall where all the tracks end.
